Blog readers send 950 ShelterBoxes to help disaster survivors

An obscure blog has kick-started a massive fundraising campaign that resulted in donations of almost £50,000 for international disaster relief charity, ShelterBox.

Today is the 3 month mark, since the fault slipped. Here's today's report from ShelterBox :

ShelterBox has now delivered over 13,000 ShelterBoxes to families who lost everything in the 7.3-magnitude quake, with each box containing a disaster relief tent to house a family of up to 10 and other items essential for survival.

As the world marks the three-month anniversary of the disaster, ShelterBox is preparing to send another 5,000 boxes of aid – enough for a further 50,000 people – with thousands more ShelterBoxes due to arrive in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, during the coming months.

The other people, and groups of people in our first box. I say groups , because the Stratford Upon Avon group has a huge list of boxes , going back 4 years.

We have a 28.90 British Pound share of this box , I trust the other people in our box won't mind if we name it Gerry the Piano Man in honor of a friend of ours . For Renee's father, box #46276.

So here we are , Owen, Evelyn, Olivia, the people from Stratford Upon Avon, and us Fish Campers.
All sitting on a shelf in Cornwall, waiting to go somewhere that is in need of help.

Last Tuesday was the 60th day for this little experiment. Several things have happened since then.
First we are here as of tonight.

We are £75 away from finishing box #99.

I never did this sort of thing before, and we sorta made it up as we went along. Now, I get receipts from Cornwall, for our boxes. As I understand this JustGiving has been making a weekly
deposit to ShelterBox. These started on the 1st of Febuary.

One month ago today this site came up, and thanks to so many people we are filling box # 98 tonight. 980 people this site has sheltered. I promised that we would follow these boxes, and have inquired when we would get some of our box numbers. The events of the past 5 weeks have kept our friends in England jumping, but this note came this morning :

These details are sent to us on a weekly basis, when they are received
we then attribute the donations to donors and allocate box numbers.

Aid to Haiti continues while ShelterBox responds to three more disasters

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — A pre-dawn rain shower soaked tens of thousands living in rudimentary shelters in Haiti's capital Thursday, an alarming taste of the havoc a sustained tropical downpour could wreak on this earthquake-ravaged country.

Rain collapsed cardboard shacks and soaked clothing and bedding at the Marassa 14 camp, where about 2,500 earthquake-displaced people live in a dry riverbed. People scrambled to shore up leaks.

Families with newborn babies and pregnant women have been given emergency shelter by the ShelterBox Response Team operating in Haiti.

The Response Team have set up a ShelterBox camp for up to 1,000 people on the Henfrasa sports field in Delmas, Port au Prince, Haiti, providing emergency shelter for the most in need and the most vulnerable.

ShelterBox Response Team member and General Manager Lasse Petersen said: ‘We agreed with the local community that the initial tent allocation would be for families with pregnant women and families with newborns.

‘We’re prioritising women and children, providing disaster relief tents, blankets, water containers, children’s packs and kitchenware, basically enough to set up families who have lost everything.

‘The Dutch marines have been very helpful for us in providing storage at Port au Prince airport as well as providing security to our team during the distribution of aid. There are hundreds of thousands of people left homeless but this is the first of our deliveries with
many thousands more to come.’

Part of this project is to follow these boxes as far as we can here. One of our group , lost her father last week . So let us name our first box shaped bottle Gerry the Piano Man in memory of Renee's dad.

I came across this item this morning, from someone on the ground in Haiti -

I drove back to our camp just after dark a couple of nights ago, rushing to meet our own night-time curfew. At street corner after corner, people had blocked access to their blocks by placing stones in the way. They didn't want vehicles rushing blindly in and injuring sleeping families. I looked up these blocks and saw winding ribbons of re-created bedrooms, demarcated with bedsheets and string, as far as my eyes could see in the dark.

Relief in Haiti

I find it pretty amazing that a small group of people who may never see each other , get together to help a small group of people they will never meet. I thank each and everyone of us for these small steps.

I'm looking forward to receiving an email shortly about our first box. In the meantime I'm making us a map for Haiti. Gerry the Piano Man is about to be a push pin in our map here.
